Popular Nigerian comedian, actor, and activist Adebowale ‘Debo’ Adedayo, better known as Mr Macaroni, has opened up about his past financial struggles, revealing how he faced bankruptcy, massive debt, and a painful betrayal from someone he trusted.
A Costly Mistake: How It All Unraveled
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Mr Macaroni shared how he lost over half a billion Naira due to a scam, a failed investment, and financial mismanagement. His troubles began around 2021/2022 when he fell victim to fraud while simultaneously losing all his savings. Despite the financial turmoil, he kept his struggles to himself.
“If you know me well, you’d know I don’t like sharing my problems. I could be going through the worst and still be helping others, but I’d never talk about my own issues,” he wrote.
The Downward Spiral of Debt
To manage his growing financial commitments, he resorted to borrowing money, assuming he could pay it back easily. However, he soon realized he was trapped in a cycle of debt, using his earnings just to cover interest payments.
“I make millions, so I never thought borrowing would be an issue. But I got too comfortable and didn’t realize I was using my income just to pay back interest,” he admitted.
He also reflected on his habit of always prioritizing others over himself.
“I’d give my lunch money to someone who didn’t have breakfast, forgetting I’d go hungry when it was my turn to eat. My advice? Share your breakfast, but keep your lunch money,” he advised.
A Career Breakthrough Amid Personal Struggles
Despite his financial woes, 2024 became a turning point in his acting career, with two of his films featured at international festivals and receiving critical acclaim. But behind the scenes, the burden of his debts remained heavy.
Adding to his challenges, he suffered a deep betrayal from someone he considered family.
“I hardly trust people, and nothing surprises me about human behavior. But this one? I could never have prepared for it,” he said.
A Message of Resilience and Hope
Refusing to be defeated, Mr Macaroni reaffirmed his determination to rise above his struggles.
“One thing about me is that I’m a warrior! When I fall, I bounce back even stronger by God’s grace. I keep my head up,” he declared.
With the support of family and true friends, he made tough but necessary decisions and is now in a much better place emotionally and financially. He encouraged others facing difficulties to remain hopeful.
“To anyone going through tough times—DO NOT GIVE UP! People will betray you, but don’t let that stop you. You are alive for a reason, and every day, you must fight to be a better person than you were yesterday.”
He concluded with a powerful message:
“May the love in our hearts always be greater than the hate, betrayal, and wickedness in the world.”
