Health officials in Benue State have confirmed three cases of Lassa fever out of seven suspected cases, with one fatality recorded.
According to Dr. Asema Msuega, the State Epidemiologist, the victim died from complications before test results confirmed the infection. The two other patients are currently receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) Makurdi’s Isolation Centre.
Health authorities have started contact tracing for relatives of the confirmed cases, with four close contacts already showing symptoms of Lassa fever.
Dr. Msuega advised residents to take preventive measures, including Keeping rodents out of their homes, storing food properly to prevent contamination, sleeping in well-ventilated spaces to reduce the risk of disease spread
Lassa fever is a viral infection primarily spread through contact with rodent urine or droppings. Early symptoms include fever, weakness, and headaches, which can escalate to more severe complications if not treated promptly.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious symptoms to health authorities immediately.
