As part of its 50th-anniversary celebrations, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) honored Dr. Ofem Egbe Enang, an Associate Professor of Medicine and Acting Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, with a prestigious meritorious service award.
The award recognizes Dr. Enang’s dedication, industriousness, and commitment to advancing the university’s objectives and goals. The ceremony, chaired by UNICAL Vice-Chancellor Prof. Florence Banku Obi, was attended by university management, Senate members, staff, and students.
Other distinguished awards presented at the event included the Long & Dedicated Service Award, Best Deans, and Outstanding Lecturers in Faculties/Institutes. Among the honorees was Prof. Victor Ansa, former Provost of the College of Medical Sciences and a member of the Governing Council, also from the Department of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Enang’s Remarkable Career
Dr. Enang is a highly accomplished clinician with over 30 years of experience in medical practice. He holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Lagos and a Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism from the National Medical College (FMCP). His expertise spans clinical research, medical education, and leadership in healthcare management.
His academic journey includes an MBBCh from the University of Calabar (1992), a Certificate in Clinical Research (Clinical Trial Specialization) from Harvard Medical School’s Global Clinical Scholars Research Training program (2015/2016), and Fellowships from both the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) and the American College of Physicians (FACP).
Leadership and Contributions to Medicine
Dr. Enang has held several leadership positions, including:
- President, Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-UCTH) (2003-2005)
- President, Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) (2006)
- Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Cross River State (2010-2012)
- Board Member, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (2013-2015)
- Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Training & Research), UCTH (2016-2019)
- Second Vice President, Nigerian Medical Association (2018-2020)
Dr. Enang also served as a Visiting Lecturer at the Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, in 2021. He continues to make significant contributions as an Associate Professor at UNICAL and an Honorary Consultant Physician/Endocrinologist at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
