A massive fire engulfed parts of Otedola Bridge in Lagos last night after a 50,000-litre tanker carrying petroleum products overturned while making a turn. The explosion, which occurred at 8:18 p.m., sent panic through the area as motorists scrambled to escape the growing inferno.
According to Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), emergency responders quickly activated a multi-agency response plan to contain the fire and manage the wreckage. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, reported that the fire had spread to a nearby church, a bungalow, and four vehicles.
With memories of the tragic 2018 explosion at the same location—where 12 people lost their lives and 54 vehicles were destroyed—many drivers abandoned their cars in a desperate bid to flee. Emergency personnel, including LASEMA, the State Fire Service, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), worked tirelessly through the night to bring the blaze under control and prevent further damage.
Adeseye confirmed that while firefighting operations were ongoing, no casualties had been reported at the time. “Further updates will follow as the situation develops,” she added.
LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Boss Okunbo, also acknowledged the severity of the incident, stating, “It is some sort of explosion. We are awaiting a preliminary report. LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team is at the location.”
Authorities continue to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the accident while ensuring the area is safe for commuters. More updates will be provided as new information emerges.
