President Bola Tinubu has appointed Kayode Opeifa as the new Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC). Opeifa, who previously served as the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, succeeds Ben Iloanusi, who had been serving in an acting capacity since the exit of Fidet Okhiria on October 18, 2024, after completing his second four-year term.
Opeifa gained prominence during his tenure as the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation under Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration. He introduced policies that modernized Lagos’ transportation system, improved traffic management, and positioned the state as a model for urban transport across Africa.
Building on his accomplishments in Lagos, Opeifa was later appointed as the Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Additionally, he played a significant role in addressing the notorious Apapa gridlock. As Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT), Opeifa collaborated with former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who chaired the team, to tackle traffic congestion at Lagos ports. The team was tasked with finding sustainable solutions to one of the nation’s most pressing transportation challenges, which earned Opeifa national recognition for his expertise in the sector.
By taking on the leadership of the NRC, Opeifa is stepping into a critical role aimed at advancing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure and services.
