Falana, in his petition, condemned the act as a clear violation of the officer’s fundamental rights, calling for immediate redress.
Makinde Vincent, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), a Nigerian officer controversially leg-chained at the Asokoro Police Station, has been granted bail after intervention by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN).
A viral video confirmed ASP Makinde Vincent was subjected to the degrading treatment.
Falana, in his petition, condemned the act as a clear violation of the officer’s fundamental rights, calling for immediate redress.
SaharaReporters reports that Vincent was granted bail and released on Wednesday by the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force.
A source privy to the situation, Godiya, confirmed Vincent’s release to SaharaReporters on Thursday, saying, “The officer (Vincent) was granted bail yesterday.”
SaharaReporters also learnt that Vincent was a serving police officer at the FED OPS Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
“The officer has been detained at Asokoro Police Station since November 11, 2024, for an undisclosed offence. His legs have since been chained in the custody of the police,” Falana said.
On Monday, SaharaReporters reported that Falana had demanded the immediate and unconditional release of ASP Vincent, who had been detained in Asokoro Police Station, Abuja, since November 11.
Falana said Vincent had been leg-chained at Asokoro Police Station since November for an undisclosed offence.
He said, “He has been detained at Asokoro Police station since the 11th November 2024 for an undisclosed offence. His legs have since been chained in the custody of the police.
“A fellow police officer who took pity on the detainee has just sent his picture to me.
“I call on the police authorities to release ASP Makinde Vincent and investigate his dehumanisation in the police custody.”
Efforts to get the reactions and comments of the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on the matter failed as he did not answer calls made to his mobile phone number.
