The Zamfara State chapter of the National Human Rights Commission, on Wednesday, expressed concern over the increasing number of human rights violations in the state.
According to the NHRC Coordinator for Zamfara, Abdullahi Abubakar, the commission has recorded over 120 cases of human rights violations so far in 2024, including issues such as abuse, neglect, and the infringement of fundamental freedoms.
Speaking at the 2024 World Human Rights Day rally, which aimed to highlight the importance of protecting human rights in the state, Abubakar called on the state government to implement relevant laws passed by the previous administration.
He stated that these laws would strengthen efforts to safeguard citizens’ rights and ensure justice for victims of abuse.
“So far, we are still counting; we have received more than 120 cases, which is higher than last year, and that is not good for the state. This is why we must continue engaging all relevant stakeholders, especially the state government, to support us wherever possible,” he said.
“We want the relevant laws passed by the previous government to become operational. We have been advocating for this, but nothing has started yet. Things will improve when we address issues such as gender-based violence, human rights violations, displacement, humanitarian assistance, and banditry.”
The Emir of Gusau, who received the participants at the palace, lauded the initiative and urged communities to uphold values of fairness and equity.
“This is a great effort by the Human Rights Commission. Those who are rich should help the poor. We must respect one another, for we are all created by the same God. If you see people suffering, please assist them. I hope this kind of awareness spreads beyond just here,” he stated.
The rally concluded with a call to government officials and community leaders to prioritise human rights and foster a culture of respect and accountability in the state.
The rally, which started at Freedom Square and concluded at the Emir’s Palace, attracted participants from various sectors, including civil society groups and community leaders.
