Students of Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, have put their planned peaceful demonstration on hold, granting the state government a 48-hour ultimatum to resolve the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Addressing the press on Tuesday in Jalingo, the President of the National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTASS), Aliyu Sulaiman, urged the government to act promptly to end the crisis and ensure students return to class without further delay.
The students initially planned to stage a protest on Monday to express their frustration over the disruption caused by the strike.
Nungamiya Lodiya, Chairman of the Joint Campus Council of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Taraba Chapter, warned that while they have postponed the protest, students would shut down major roads across the state if the crisis remains unresolved.
Similarly, Rose Agada, President of the TSU Students Union Government (SUG), lamented the hardship students are facing due to the impasse, describing it as an unfair burden placed on their academic journey.
Norbert Abeh, representing the Students Representative Assembly (SRA), appealed to both the government and the striking union to reach an amicable resolution in the students’ best interest.
ASUU’s Taraba chapter embarked on an indefinite strike on December 5, 2024, citing unmet demands by the state government. The industrial action has disrupted examinations and final-year academic activities, leaving students stranded.
