To honour the memory of the late co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases at the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, under the leadership of Christian Happi, recently unveiled a memorial fountain and garden in his name.
At the event, Wigwe’s siblings— Emeka and Peggy— alongside the Chairman and CEO of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote; the Group Deputy Managing Director, Access Bank Plc, Chizoma Okoli; and Secretary to the Osun State Government, Teslim Igbalaye who represented Governor Ademola Adeleke, were given a tour of the building, which was decorated with pictures and quotes of the late banker.
While the Director of ACEGID was giving a brief speech, Emeka Wigwe could not hide his emotions as he shed tears and had to be consoled by those standing beside him.
A stone in front of the garden and fountain had the inscription, “The memorial stands in memory of Dr. Herbert O. Wigwe, a silent, steadfast, and strong supporter of ACEGID. It also serves as a continuous reflection of his selfless service for the benefit of humanity.”
Speaking at the event, Dangote said, “While Herbert was with us, he was very great, and he contributed a lot to humanity, which I believe is one of the reasons we are here today— to immortalise him and continue talking about the good things he did while he was alive. May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace.”
The business tycoon also commended Happi for coming up with such initiative to honour Wigwe.
