Hours after PUNCH reported that some flood-displaced victims living outside IDP camps in Borno State were denied relief items and cash assistance, the state government issued an urgent appeal, urging all flood victims outside official camps to relocate to nearby camps for proper registration and data collection.
The state Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, made this known on Tuesday.
Tar emphasised that victims outside the camps will receive relief materials, including food, blankets, and mats, once their details are registered.
He said, “The government is committed to providing support to all affected individuals, regardless of their current living arrangements. We urge those residing in informal settings, such as filling stations and plazas, to move into official camps.”
He also noted that to streamline relief efforts and facilitate the resumption of classes for students, smaller camps will be merged into larger ones.
He added, “Camps along the Custom area will merge with Muna Camp, camps along Baga Road will merge with Gubio Camp, and camps along Bama Road will merge with Dalori Camp.”
He said the consolidation will enable the government to provide more efficient support and services, including education, healthcare, and sanitation.
He added that the committee established by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has swung into action, working to ensure effective support for the affected communities.
PUNCH had earlier reported that thousands of displaced people living with their relatives and in official settings, including streets and filling stations, have been denied access to relief items and cash assistance from the state government.
