The spokesperson of the command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, September 12, said that illicit drugs and dangerous weapons were recovered from the suspects.
The Kano State Police Command has effected the arrest of 26 suspected members of phone-snatching syndicates.
During the arrest, they recovered 126 stolen mobile phones from the suspects.
The spokesperson of the command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, September 12, said that illicit drugs and dangerous weapons were recovered from the suspects.
“The Kano State Police Command has recorded a significant success in its efforts to crackdown on the remnants of thuggery-related crimes, including mobile phone snatching and armed robbery in the State,” the statement read.
“In line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM to all Police Commands and Formations to dominate public spaces against all forms of crimes and criminality, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Salman Dogo Garba convened a strategic meeting with all tactical units of the Command and directed that the remnants of the menace of thuggery (Fadan Yan Daba), mobile phone armed robbery and snatching be decimated.
“Consequently, a series of targeted operations were carried out in the State that led to the arrest of a total of twenty-six (26) suspected mobile phone armed robbers/snatchers and recovery of one hundred and twenty-six (126) stolen/robbed mobile phones.”
In addition to the recovery of the mobile phones, the operations also yielded the recovery of various items, including:
– Twenty-one (21) pieces of potwine injections
– Twenty (20) sachets of diazepam tablets
– Six hundred (600) pieces of exol tablets
– Three (3) parcels and other large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp
– Two (2) cutlasses
– Two (2) scissors
– One (1) long sword
– Two (2) Computer Laptops.
According to the police spokesperson, the operations, which were carried out between 1st to 12th September 2024, were aimed at addressing the remnants of the menace of mobile phone snatching/robbery bedevilling some parts of the State Metropolis.
“The suspects are currently undergoing discrete investigations at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), thereafter will be charged to court for prosecution. The recovered phones will be returned to their rightful owners after proper identification and verification as all machinery have been put in place to trace the owners,” he said.
“The Commissioner of Police commended the officers and men involved in the operations for their professionalism and dedication. He also appreciated the cooperation and support of the public, which led to the success of the operations.
